Items That Contain Scrap Gold

Many of us, at one point or another, will shop for gold in the jewelry department of a department store or in a jewelry store. The higher the karat, the more expensive it will be. But have you ever wondered why? What does it all mean? And what is all of that fine print stamped into your piece of gold?

What are karats really? How do you know how pure that gold really is? This article will answer these questions and more. Karats, spelled "carats" outside of North America, are the little numbers stamped on a piece of gold in the format of "xxK" or "xxKT".

The numbers refer to the type of gold and to the actual gold content in the particular piece of jewelry. Gold is malleable in its pure state. Other metals are added to strengthen it and in some cases to enhance color.

An example is "rose gold" comprises gold and copper.

Knowing the number of karats is key to calculating the gold content on your own. Here is how to use the number of karats to figure out how pure your piece of gold is. Say you purchase a ring that is 14K gold. Since the number amount of karats you can have is 24K, divide the 14 Karats by the You will get.

This means that the gold is As you can see in the above chart, "millesimal fineness" refers to the percent of gold, while karats refer to the ratio of gold to other metals in the piece. Converting between the two is rather easy when you convert the percent to fraction form, or vice versa. Bullion: Precious metals in a bulk, uncoined form such as gold bars, considered in mass rather than value. Carat: Not to be confused with Karat in North America, a Carat is a unit of measurement used for precious stones.

The work of his research team—made up of Loghman Moradi, research associate, and Hiwa Salimi, PhD student— changes all of that. The problem with gold, explained Foley, is that it is one of the least reactive chemical elements, making it difficult to dissolve. That is why "artifacts discovered from 3, year ago still have gold on them.

Given this difficulty, there are two main ways to get gold: through mining gold from the earth, which requires massive amounts of sodium cyanide; and recycling gold from secondary sources like jewelry or electronic scraps.

Recycling gold from jewelry or electronic scraps—think computer chips and circuits lined with thin layers of gold—is not without issue either. Annually, Foley explained, the world produces more than 50 million tons of electronic waste per year; that amount is increasing rapidly due to non-stop innovation that shortens the life span of electronic devices.

Because of the lack of suitable recycling methods, he continued, more than 80 per cent of "e-waste" ends up in landfills, making it a pretty serious environmental issue. There are two current industry standards for removing gold from electronic scraps.

The first is pyrometallurgy, which burns the gold off using high temperatures. This method is energy intensive, cost prohibitive and releases dangerous gases, like dioxins.

The second is hydrometallurgy in which leaching chemicals like cyanide solution or aqua regia—Latin for king's water, which is a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and hydrochloric acid—are used, a process Foley called "expensive, very toxic and completely non-recyclable.

Foley used the city of Guiyu, China, considered the e-waste capital of the world, as an example. Guiyu receivestonnes of e-waste per day, and because of unregulated processing, Guiyu has the highest levels of dioxins for any city ever recorded.

The result, he continued, is the majority of Guiyu's residents have some form of neurological damage. What Foley and his research team discovered is a process that extracts gold efficiently and effectively without any of the downfalls of current industry practices.

We use a minute amount of an acid and an oxidant to finish our solution. The solution, he continued, is the greenest solvent next to water, so eliminates the vast number of environmental concerns that come with long standing methods of gold extraction. In this technique, the gold extraction is done under very mild conditions while the solution dissolves gold with the fastest rate ever recorded.

When time is factored in with lower toxicity and consequential effects, this new solution appears to be a natural replacement that could revolutionize the industry. The other main advantage over current recycling processes, he continued, is that this specific solution is gold selective, meaning it only dissolves gold not other base metals, like copper, nickel, iron and cobalt, found in printed circuit boards.

The next step for Foley and his team is to move the process into large-scale applications for gold recycling from gold-bearing materials.

We are not yet viable on a big scale like that," he said, adding that to that end they are currently searching for industry partners. Explore further. More from Chemistry. Naturally, such substances are too hard for consumers to retrieve, which might be why, according to the University of Edinburgh UEabout seven percent of the world's gold supply is currently locked inside of electronics.

While removing that gold has heretofore been a highly toxic and inefficient proposition, researchers now think that a new process will make prospecting for gold in electronics heaps more achievable than ever. Gold is often found on printed circuit boards, particularly under keyboards where its durability is an advantage.

According to the UE researchers, about tonnes of the metal are used in electronics each year. The new process to remove it uses a mild acid as opposed to harsher chemicals such as cyanide or mercury that are currently used to extract gold. First, printed circuit boards are dissolved in the acid which turns all of the metal in the board to liquid.

Then, an oily solvent made from toluene is added, kicking off a process known as solvent extraction. Toluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon commonly found in paint thinners. The toluene solvent pulls the gold free from the other materials in the acid wash where the metal can be recovered and used again. Likewise, the solvent and acid can be reused, cutting down on waste. The work Love and his team carried out is part of a student- and staff-led initiative at UE to promote the circular economy, which focuses on the efficient use of materials and their reuse as well.

This includes acids.

You can use Aqua Regia a mixture of two acids to dissolve gold, but this is not by any description "mild". It's this stage of the process I am not believing. Maybe they use Aqua Regia, and then leach the gold out with the other part of the process. But I'm not sure about this. You may be better using Cyonide leaching, just keep a close eye on the pH levels to avoid creating Cyonide gas that is generally bad I am interested and will read up further.

Expanded Viewpoint September 1, PM. Yes, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid Aqua Regia are hardly to be considered "mild" acids, unless you compare them to hydrofluoric acid!EScrap such as whole computers or individual components from computers contain gold, palladium and other precious materials.

The Many Uses of Gold

Computer circuit boards have gold and other precious metal traces in densities comparable to mined ore.

There is enough valuable material to make refinement profitable on even a moderate scale. Gold is the 2nd best conductor of electricity, it is the most malleable metal, it can be made into micron-thin leaf and it is highly resistant to tarnish. These characteristics made gold well suited for circuit boards. Gold is frequently used as connectors "Fingers"and sometimes used as the PBC traces and components pins in high performance boards.

Many circuit boards have small amounts of Silver and Palladium in their solder and components e. Let's examine the many components of a typical PC. All computers have these same set of components. Computer cases hold the PC together and are made from steel and plastic.

They add most of the bulk and none of the value steel is worth mere pennies a pound. The case can make it unprofitable to recycle small lots of PC's, as the case's mass and volume drive up the shipping costs. If you have a small number of PCs, the best approach is to disassemble them and sell us the individual components.

The cases can be sold to a local scrap yard and recycled. If you have a large number of PCs more than lbsshipping becomes economical. We can arrange for a truck to pick up the whole computers and bring them to our facility for disassembly.

We pay more for disassembled computers, as shipping and labor expenses are far lower for PC components. The power supply provides regulated, DC power to all the PC's components. It is a large metal box with a number of color-coded wires connecting it to the other components in the PC.

The power supply is heavy due to the iron core in the transformer within it. As a result, it has very little value and it is bulky and heavy. Like the case, the power supply diminishes the profitablity of PC recycling. The motherboard is the large circuit board that connects the innards of the PC together.

All the components communicate with each other through the motherboard. The Motherboard is rich in value and has several of the most valuable parts of the PC attached to it. The board itself has many gold plated connectors and pins.

Older and high end motherboards such as those found in rack servers, telecommunications equipment, or military test equipmentoften have gold in the traces and components. Motherboards are one of the most value-dense portions of the PC.

Attached to the motherboard are the processor and RAM. These contain precious metals as well.

Warning : Motherboards typically have a battery on them - it should not be thrown out. Batteries contain toxic materials and need to be recycled.Gold is the only element with the color that bears its name.

It's a soft, ductile metal that is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It's also one of the noble metals, which means it resists corrosion, making it safe for jewelry and even to eat in small amounts.

While it's certainly possible to pan for gold, you may be surprised at all the everyday items you use that contain gold. Here's a list of places to look to find gold. You can use it, recycle it, or sell it. If you're reading this article online, you're currently using an item that contains a significant amount of gold. The processors and connectors in computers, tablets, and smartphones use gold. You can also find gold in televisions, gaming consoles, printers, or essentially anything electronic.

It's possible to recover this gold, but it takes a fair amount of know-how since the process typically involves burning the electronics to a crisp and using cyanide or acid to separate the gold. It's not particularly environmentally friendly, but it's effective. You may be asking yourself why gold is used in electronics, rather than copperwhich is more affordable, or silver, which is a superior electrical conductor. The reason is that copper isn't really up to the task, while silver corrodes too quickly.

Since most electronics only last a few years, there is a trend toward using silver anyway, so if you're after gold, it's best to use older electronics rather than new ones. Before you throw out an old smoke detector, you just might want to check it for gold.

These two cultures had been separated by a vast ocean, they had never touched one another, they spoke different languages and lived entirely different lives.

Yet they had one thing in common - they both held gold in highest esteem and used it to make some of their most important objects. Throughout the history of our planet, almost every established culture has used gold to symbolize power, beauty, purity, and accomplishment. Today we continue to use gold for our most significant objects: wedding rings, Olympic medals, Oscars, Grammys, money, crucifixes and ecclesiastical art.
